London: A new study suggests that a cholesterol-lowering drug can slow down eye disease in diabetics.
Diabetes can damage the fine blood vessels in the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the five leading causes of vision loss worldwide.
A drug called fenofibrate, which has been used to control cholesterol for more than 30 years, may reduce the risk of developing the condition by 27 percent, according to the latest research.
Experts say that this discovery has the potential to benefit people suffering from this condition.
Dr Lucy Chambers, head of research communications at Diabetes UK, said eye problems are “scary and common complications of diabetes”. However, timely measures can prevent early signs of the damage process.
