Excess Turmeric and Green Tea Intake: Potential Health Risks and Emergency Concerns

Green Tea

Michigan: Experts warn that the majority of people are putting their liver health at risk in the pursuit of improving their overall health.

New research has shown that high consumption of popular botanical supplements such as turmeric and green tea can cause medical problems in people.

Medical researchers at the University of Michigan looked at data from 2017 to 2021, covering 9,685 people. It found that more than 4.7 percent of adults had used one of six possible supplements in the past 30 days, with the most commonly used supplements being turmeric and green tea.

Most supplement users take these botanicals by choice and not because of any medical prescription. And while reports of liver damage linked to these supplements are not new, they have been reported to be on the rise for some time.

Medical researchers are concerned that people are unaware that they are at serious risk of overdosing on these supplements, which could result in emergency department admissions.
